It was scary, but at the same time exciting
Just over seven years ago I was recruited to build up our trademark practice – a big responsibility that I took on with a mix of horror and delight. I had worked on trademarks in the past, but I did not really have any practical experience in building a business case and since the department was completely new there was no experience to tap into. The situation was a bit scary because I stepped outside my comfort zone, but at the same time exciting. In hindsight I realise how extremely stimulating it was to be given that much responsibility and trust at such an early stage – it made me grow enormously in my profession. Today I feel much more secure in my professional capacity. DLA Piper really provides you with opportunities. When they see an area that has potential, you are given free rein. For example, I have worked with the gaming industry because I saw a need to work on gaming legislation issues.
